Stuðlagil Canyon

Having spent a week fishing with my geologist brother-in-law was familiar with volcanic columnar joints, but had no idea how dramatic they could be until we stopped at the Stuðlagil Canyon! Even though no fish were visible in the beautiful river, the joints, some at crazy curvatures or 90° to each other, were spectacular.

Wish Tom were still with us to describe the geologic time, heat, pressure and movement necessary for such amazing structures.

Curved, bent, and 90° columns within feet of each other!

At water level the columns look like some of the best mosaic tile work imaginable!

Just beautiful!
