Trim Castle

The late 12th century castle was in private ownership until 1990 so there was little preservation and lots of scavenging, but the filming of Braveheart in 1994 and the influx of tourists have saved it. The Englishman sent to oversee the area was smart enough to marry the daughter of a local chieftain so despite the impressive defensive works and imposing structure it was seldom attacked.

The ledges in the walls show the expansion over the years as additional floors and rooms were added.
