Peru - “Solpikey” y “Hakuchas”

Julio admitted that when he was learning Spanish as a boy, he had to figure out ways to write his Quechuan language using our letters. He basically developed a phonetic method for recording the Quechuan dialect, which is essentially how I tried to record some of the numerous phrases he shared along the trail…

The two most important and useful I already find myself using in conversation after our time with Julio…

First, Sol-PI/key(with that guttural Apache throat catch sound), or “thank you,” for hiking along with us and having an interest in our little family adventure. The most memorable parts of our trips usually don’t entail the photo ops that appear in magazines or in the travel channels…rather, it’s the local interactions/foods/beverages/cultures, and especially the people willing to share them with us.

And finally, Ha-koo-chus, or “let’s go!” as Julio would say enthusiastically each morning or after our rest stops along the way. Because Peru 🇵🇪 has now been journaled, blogged, unpacked, washed and put up. But, thankfully only in the SouTex heat a few days before it’s off to Iceland 🇮🇸 to spend a week fly fishing for trout, char and salmon with brother-in-law TJ before Daphne and Marina join up to wander the Ring Road, looking for the curiosities and intricacies of that place. Meanwhile, Sophia will be in northern India 🇮🇳 in the Himalayan foothills doing remote medical clinics for the indigenous villages there.

Gonna be a lot harder to phonetically convey Icelandic, but with enough local brews, certainly willing to try.

Have already promised Julio I’d share photos of the rivers and any fish we might be able to fool!

Enjoy your rivers, wherever you might wade into them!
