Tungnaà and Kaldakvísl!

Began the first full day of fishing in light rain on the Tungnaà River at Three Streams where several smaller rivers and creeks join the main flow. As the weather brightened (not really cleared) fish began to roll in the gin clear water and with some fly changes and depth adjustments managed to land my first Arctic char, about 15” and so pretty!

Words seem inadequate to describe the rich beauty in this stark yet vibrant area. Maybe photos help…?

Yep, bluebonnets (Arctic lupine) in Iceland!

We fished a couple more spots on the Tungnaá and saw fish, but the variable weather made them a problem we couldn’t solve, so we went back east and took in the Kaldakvísl River at an area called Ós where it confluences with another river and a reservoir.

Hugging the wall in the fast clear water. Flow rate, wind and limited back casting space made the area a challenge but seeing big char kept us focused!

After an hour of adapting and experimenting fooled a new personal best char, 19” and fat!

Slippery sucker, but eventually safely returned to the river unharmed…

Content with my day, headed up the bluff above Tom and Nonni and spent the next 45 minutes sighting and directing Tom to 2 nice char! Almost as much fun as catching them!

Awesome day, then back to the lodge…

Conditions were tough, but it IS Iceland!

Have used “guides” more the past month than in the past twenty years, but visiting foreign countries and with the adventures we’ve attempted, have really enjoyed having Julio and Nonni along the route. Not because they directed us to “do this, there” but because they’ve been interactive, instructive, and informative, providing insight into history, culture, and local flora and fauna…and they’ve been such fun!
Lifetime memories from the relationships forged.
