Big Hole Battlefield

The Nez Perce are the latest tribe screwed by the US government that we have studied on the trip. They abided by their 1855 treaty for 22 years, became excellent farmers and ranchers, and then white miners trespassed and found gold. They were reluctantly moving onto a"new" reservation that was 1/10th the original size when a young warrior was goaded into killing the man who had murdered his father.
Rather than send a sheriff, 99 troopers and 34 civilians, a posse, went to arrest him. Bloodshed followed and Chief Joseph and others began their epic retreat toward Canada.
Their village on the Big Hole was attacked at dawn, numerous women and children killed before the warriors regrouped, drove the soldiers back up the hillside, and allowed the Nez Perce to retreat.
If you have any interest in western history, you should read "I Will Fight No More Forever" for a look at Chief Joseph, the Nez Perce, and their resolve. If not for the treachery of the Crows, they might have made it to Canada.
Village was to right by the river, troops advanced then fell back up the hill to the left.
